Raining Flesh

A disturbing story from yesterday reminded me of something from Charles Fort's work:
"The Kentucky Phenomenon."

So it was called, in its day, and now we have an occurrence that attracted a great deal of attention in its own time. Usually these things of the accursed have been hushed up or disregarded -- sup- [44/45] pressed like the seven black rains of Slains -- but, upon March 3, 1876, something occurred, in Bath County, Kentucky, that brought many newspaper correspondents to the scene.

The substance that looked like beef that fell from the sky.

Upon March 3, 1876, at Olympian Springs, Bath County, Kentucky, flakes of a substance that looked like beef fell from the sky -- "from a clear sky." We'd like to emphasize that it was said that nothing but this falling substance was visible in the sky. It fell in flakes of various sizes; some two inches square, one, three, or four inches square. The flake-formation is interesting: later we shall think of it as signifying pressure -- somewhere. It was a thick shower, on the ground, on trees, on fences, but it was narrowly localized: or upon a strip of land about 100 yards long and about 50 yards wide. For the first account, see the Scientific American, 34-197, and the New York Times, March 10, 1876 . [...]
Here is the recent story:
Flesh chunks found in Iowa water lines

Monday, April 25th, 2005
The Associated Press

CARROLL, Iowa (AP) - City officials are perplexed over the discovery of mysterious chunks of flesh that have been clogging up city water lines. A month ago, city officials sent a hunk of meaty-fatty tissue to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for identification.

As they wait for those results, three similar chunks of fleshy material were found on Thursday in another water main during routine flushing, Public Works Director Randy Krauel said.

A city worker discovered the blockage when a diffuser on a fire hydrant became clogged, Krauel said.

Additional flushing removed two other chunks from water mains, he said.

"Again, we're really not sure what it is," he said. "The pieces kind of looked like the first one. There was no hair and no real bone. There were varying degrees of the substance, whatever it is." [...]
Probably just some animal that came to an unkind end, right? Read all of Charles Fort's books and you may not be so sure anymore. Anyway, I couldn't resist the opportunity to quote him:
"Almost all people are hypnotics. The proper authority saw to it that the proper belief should be induced, and the people believed properly." - Charles H. Fort
Hopefully you weren't eating lunch while reading this entry.
